Growing up on a farm in Northern Minnesota you learn some things about yourself and who you want to be. I found it amazing that my dad worked from sunup until sundown 6 or 7 days a week depending on the need. He would often experiment with new ideas and concepts even when he was trying to finish the basics. Still, he could do everything perfect and no matter how hard he worked, one hailstorm, or a lack of rain could wipe all his work away. It wasn’t until I was older that I understood his persistence and chase for innovation and vision of perfection that I now strive to model in the field of technology. So how does a backwoods farm kid go from dreams of hunting and fishing his years away into an IT leader looking for the next business challenge to tackle? As it often does, it starts with love. I attended the University of Minnesota Duluth where I explored my love of the earth and finished with a Bachelor of Science in geology. While there I took my first job working in the computer labs helping students navigate the many pitfalls of not saving their work and sowing that spark of innovation when they learned something new. Some years later I found a need to revisit my love of technology during the Great Recession. Eventually I learned enough to take on contract work and was fortunate to work with some of the largest, most advanced, and amazing non-profits and companies in the area. I am still friends with many of those I met here and saw what is truly possible for those companies with the resources and time to accomplish with technology. The opportunity came for me to strike out as a manager for the first time and I jumped at the chance to finally call the shots. Unbeknownst to me at the time, what from the outside looked so easy, I soon discovered was much harder as I no longer was able to only worry about the technical details but all the other trappings that come with management like budgets, cash flow, and internal politics. I continue to work as a manager, but I have discovered over the past few years who I am has changed along with how I think. Now I look forward to mending fences between business silos that once viewed IT as the enemy. Collaborating on cross-functional teams on new ventures and trying to bridge the divide between what the business thinks it wants and what it actually needs is now what gets me out of bed each day. Not that I don’t love the latest and greatest technological advancements but now I tend to ask questions about how they can impact and improve our business model and enhance the execution of our mission statement.
