Stefano Grassi

I was 22yo when during one of my classes at university I had the "vision" that brought me to turn a passion for a technology into a job: to integrate different disciplines into Geographic Information System (GIS)-based models to be applied in energy field. My professional experience in energy industry has been leveraged during my research career to build successful partnerships with energy industry and to convince them to finance research projects for a total amount of CHF 1.9Mln. The contact with the industry partners helped me also to understand their needs and to successfully show how engineering issues can be efficiently solved with a GIS tools with a significant time and money saving. My strong conviction in the capabilities of GIS resulted in a prototype tool combining big data using advanced mathematical techniques such as Machine Learning and spatial geoprocessing. As researcher, I investigated and explored the capabilities of GIS in renewable energy and power grid planning in particular in modelling the spatial distribution of the financial, engineering and environmental risk of renewable energy projects and energy infrastructures.
