Rebekah Varela

Rebekah Varela is the Chief Operating Officer for Doctors Without Borders (MSF USA), an international medical humanitarian organization providing medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare in 70+ countries. In this role from 2020, Rebekah leads strategic planning, internal operations and board relations. Rebekah previously worked with Doctors Without Borders as Country Director and Administrator from 2011 – 2019 in East Africa, the Pacific and the Caucasus with a focus on HIV/AIDS, maternal healthcare and tuberculosis, respectively. As the Country Director in the Republic of Georgia, Rebekah led teams implementing the endTB Clinical Trial, proving the non-inferiority of shorter, less toxic regiments for treatment of MDR-TB as well as the introduction of concurrent treatment for XDR-TB and Hepatitis C in occupied Georgian territories. Rebekah has also served in senior leadership positions at the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) Office of Policy and Planning and the UCSF Center for Tuberculosis. Demonstrated by her career long focus on mission driven public health and healthcare organizations, Rebekah has a deep and enduring dedication to the application of organization excellence to the advancement of health outcomes worldwide. Rebekah is a trained midwife and has a BA from the University of California, Berkeley and a postgraduate diploma in Global Health from the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute, University of Manchester.
