Timothy Sewell

Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer, Chief Information Security Officer at Reveal Risk

Timothy Sewell's Summary

Cyberattacks are among the top 8 risks facing the world today. Are you happy with your cybersecurity program? For most people, the answer ranges from "I guess" to "are you kidding?" - or maybe even "don't get me started!" And it's easy to see why, given some of the challenges: 1. Expertise is in short supply 2. Costs for good help are too high
 3. Rapid shifts in program needs 4. Security has been relegated to an IT issue
 5. Every organization is a target: it’s no longer enough to just be better than your peer firms
 6. Programs are built reactively instead of proactively 7. etc. Information security cannot be the technical office of 'no.' Rather, it must enable the business, reasonably balancing risk and reward. In the 21st century, organizations rely on speed, agility, execution, and reputation. The role of security is to align those attributes with the risk appetite of the organization. With technology advancing faster than ever (e.g., blockchain, cognitive computing, and the Internet of Things), assuring digital confidentiality, integrity, availability, and safety has never been more important - or challenging! And as with all challenges, great opportunities exist for organizations that can execute a purpose-built, principle-driven information security program that delivers against business demands. I am a lifelong technology and security enthusiast with broad experience in multiple industries. I spent over a decade at Lockheed Martin designing and deploying solutions to challenging cybersecurity problems in the national security space, using a blend of "best-of-breed" from the commercial world coupled with groundbreaking custom technology. Next, I was privileged to serve as the Chief Information Security Architect at the Mayo Clinic, where I led major network, cloud, and information security projects ranging from connected devices to remote users. In my last corporate role, I was the Senior Director of Security Architecture for Eli Lilly and Company, leading a global team of advisors and directors through multiple transformative security initiatives. In October of 2018, I left to co-found Reveal Risk, a boutique cybersecurity, privacy, and risk management consultancy, because I saw an urgent need for experienced practitioners as consulting partners - partners who are able to drive significant, lasting change in large organizations. At Reveal Risk, we emphasize real-world experience and deep expertise to ensure we deliver practical, sustainable, and, most importantly, effective solutions to our clients' unique challenges.
